Video game tie-ins?

Crossovers? Joint Marketing ventures?

Video

Milk this song for everything it’s worth.

Also might copy MIB3 and just throw in time travel. Why not?

The first thing to do is identify what sort of demographics GB3 is aimed at. Then different marketing techniques can be applied to suit each of these.

IMO such a film would be typically be aimed at these kind of people.

  • Adults who were kids when GB1&2 came out. (god they were lucky). Most likely male, or at least nerdy.
  • 90’s kids who jumped on the wagon. (myself included)
  • Modern day parents & kids market. (Alvin and the chipmunks anyone)
  • Billy Murray fan club members

What sort of marketing is going to be effective for each group?

Well the first two groups are more likely to know what films are on the horizon. These kind of people can be marketed to online pretty effectively, probably with teasers and the like 6 months in advance from release date.

Third category will need more in your face, mainstream marketing channels. TV spots and cinematic trailers before similar films will be fine. A month or two before release.

In terms of causing a real stir, best to focus on pre-existing fans to spread the news. It might be an idea to do some alt. marketing.

For example, something online which might go viral. Clues about the new film rather than obvious marketing.

Task Two

Your team works for a major advertising company, two large contracts have come in and you need to choose which one your team is most suited to. You will then need to fulfil the contract brief as described below.

I chose the first option:

You have been commissioned to produce the entire advertising campaign for the film Ghostbusters 3 to be released on July 4th 2013. The promotional campaign must start 12 months before the release of the film.

  • Design a campaign that will build and maintain interest in the film right up to the release date

  • Consider all outlets for promotional content

  • Consider key dates for releasing the promotional content

  • How will the public find and access your promotions

  • How will they interact with them

Some initial ideas I have had for this assignment include:

  • How-to mobile video service. Nobody wants to go and boot up a computer or laptop to check how to do something. Cooking video apps have been successful, why not expand this into tasks like changing a tire or simple D.I.Y.
  • Viral video service: A service that can provide all the trending online  videos. Popular stuff from Reddit, twitter etc. Plus the ability to upload your own content and have it posted to different communities to see if it trends.

This blog entry will explain:

  • The details of the assignment.
  • The reasons I have chosen tumblr as the blogging platform for this assignment.

The instructions in the brief make no mention of explaining the assignment details, but I feel they are necessary to justify the blogging platform.

Out of the two briefs for the assignment I chose the following:

"Design a service that utilises video materials for online or mobile devices. Create the video materials and design diagrams for the functionality and aesthetics of the service."

The reasons for choosing tumblr to chronicle this process are as follows:

  • Firstly, on a personal level, the length of my ideas are sporadic; they might just be a sentence or they might be a couple of page and designs. Tumblr simplicty and ease of use  lends itself to this system of working. As well as this I use a mixture of colloquial professional language that might seem out of place on something like wordpress.
  • Tumblr may have less sheen than other sites, but it has a higher user base of young people than most blogging sites. The technology involved with my project will rely heavily on feedback from younger audiences (by younger I mean teen-mid age adults, not children. Though I have seen a lot of kids with iphones and the like recently. That just annoys me, the best tech I had at their age was a gameboy, pokemon yellow and dial up).
  • Easy phone access, important for on the go micro blogging.
  • Strong community and growth. I thought it would be important to choose a service that is moving forward rather than one that is stagnant. In my time on the internet (too much) I have noticed the speed at which stuff moves about and gains gravitas in communities. In my opinion tumblr is right up there, just by communities like reddit and twitter.

That is not to say that tumblr perfectly suits my needs. I would prefer the ability for people to discuss certain items directly (comments section) without having to reblog or message me privately. However, the pros outweigh the cons.
